We warmly invite you to the Column Hall at the Faculty of History, University of Warsaw, on June 13th for the workshop "Imperium et Communitas: Social Dynamics of Foreign Communities between the 2nd and 4th Centuries CE in Italy through Inscriptions."
The workshop aims to analyze the relationships between the Roman state and the "foreign" communities living within its borders from the 2nd to the 4th centuries CE. The research is based on the analysis of inscriptions (epitaphs, public inscriptions, dedications) preserved from this period. These inscriptions provide valuable information about the daily life, identity, religious beliefs, and social structures of these communities.
We aim to answer questions such as whether inscription practices travel with newcomers, who is responsible for creating inscriptions for them, how different scripts and writing systems adapt in new environments, and what these inscriptions reveal about the composition of society in Roman Italy.
