Sean Leatherbury's guest talk for the Stone-Masters project

This Thursday (2 March 2023), Sean Leatherbury will give the first guest talk for the Stone-Masters project: “Geometries in Motion: A New Look at the Fifth-Century Floor Mosaics of the Hama Cathedral, Syria”.

Abstract: “Discovered in the 1980s, the floor mosaics of the fifth-century cathedral of Hama in Syria feature a series of elaborate and colourful geometric patterns. The mosaics have been examined in terms of their motifs and inscriptions; this paper uses the mosaics as a window into the multiple functions of geometry in the Late Antique period, as patterns defined discrete spaces within the building and guided worshippers and the clergy around the interior.”

The talk is open to everyone and will take place in the Library of Papyrology, room 203, Faculty of Law and Administration (Collegium Iuridicum I), Warsaw and via Zoom. Those willing to attend online should contact Pawel Nowakowski (pawel.nowakowski--at--uw.edu.pl).
