Dagmara, Paweł and Marina in Athens: Research Results from Ghor es-Safi

Last week, Dagmara Wielgosz-Rondolino, Pawel Nowakowski and Marina Bastero Acha presented the results of archaeological and epigraphical research on Ghor es-Safi in Jordan at the "16th International Conference on the History and Archaeology of Jordan: Archaeology and Sustainability. Learning from the Past for Safe Resilient Future. 22–26 September 2025" at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

The head of the expedition, Dagmara Wielgosz-Rondolino, gave the paper "Polish mission in Ghor es-Safi. Season 2023" which presented the research done by her team, including Marcin Gładki, Agnieszka Jaremek, Paweł Nowakowski, Michał Podsiadło, Konstantinos Politis, Marcin Przybyła and George Yacoub. Subsequently, Paweł Nowakowski and Marina Bastero Acha elaborated on the epigraphical aspects in a paper titled "The epigraphical research on Ghor es-Safi: 2022–2025", co-authored by the STONE-MASTERS team members: Marina Bastero Acha, Julia Borczyńska, Paweł Nowakowski, Lorena Pérez Yarza and Andrés Rea. The collection's unique character, comprising almost 500 epitaphs of which around 200 have precise dates, enabled us to develop the project's methodology. The conference provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the epigraphy of the region with archaeologists and historians working on the Roman province of Arabia, and to seek their opinions on the development of styles in monumental epigraphy from the Roman period into Late Antiquity, as well as the spread of innovative trends in provincial milieus.
