Javier Herrera Rando’s Visit to Warsaw

Between 7 and 12 April, Javier Herrera Rando, a research fellow at UNIARQ – Centre for Archaeology of the University of Lisbon, undertook an Erasmus+ training placement within the framework of the Stone-Masters project in Warsaw.

One of his main research areas focuses on the epigraphy of Lusitania during the early Roman Empire. In collaboration with our researcher Lorena Pérez Yarza, Javier became acquainted with the project’s methodology for the palaeographic analysis of Latin inscriptions, and its applicability to the Lusitanian material was explored in depth. This visit laid the groundwork for several collaborative initiatives aimed at the palaeographic study of distinctive epigraphic corpora from Lusitania, including an upcoming visit by Lorena to Lisbon. During his stay, Javier also contributed to the “Epigraphy and Papyrology Seminar” in Warsaw with a guest lecture on the early development of epigraphic culture in the northern region of the Lusitanian province, which sparked a lively discussion, particularly concerning the Latin-Indigenous inscriptions from the area.
