On 16 October, our project hosted dr Juraj Franek from Masaryk University in Brno at the "Epigraphy and papyrology" seminar run from the Faculty of Archaeology.
Juraj gave a paper titled: "Performative Adjuration Formula in Greek-Inscribed Funerary Monuments of Late Antiquity".
Abstract: "Performative adjuration formula, introduced in Greek by the verb ὁρκίζω (rarely ὁρκῶ) and its prefixed compounds, is well-attested on various classes of Greek epigraphic documents of the Late Antiquity, ranging from apotropaic amulets and hail-preventing phylacteries to curse tablets, spells, and function of the adjuration formula across different types of evidence, special focus of the talk will be the use of performative adjurations in Greek funerary monuments from the 2nd to the 6th cent. CE."
