Lorena's Stay and Fieldwork in Berenike

Between 16 and 25 January Lorena was hosted by the joint Polish-American Archaeological Expedition working in Berenike on the Red Sea (Egypt)!

Berenike is an excellent case of a transit town and a harbour environment at the frontiers of the Roman Empire, which illustrates how epigraphical cultures pertaining to different linguistic groups blended or retained separate identities, with a splendid dossier of inscriptions in Greek, Sanskrit, and Palmyrene Aramaic. Lorena studied the palaeography of individual letters and carving techniques through autopsies, while she was supervised by Prof. Rodney Ast (University of Heidelberg). Rodney is editing a full corpus of epigraphical finds from Berenike. The corpus is likely to go to press in 2025. We can’t wait to see it in print! We are also very grateful to Mariusz Gwiazda and the Polish-American Archaeological Expedition at Berenike for helping to organize her stay.
