On Friday, 16 December 2022, Pawel Nowakowski gave a talk at the epigraphical seminar convened by Dominika Grzesik at the University of Wrocław (Instytut Historyczny Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego). Wrocław became a major centre of studies on the epigraphic cultures of the Graeco-Roman antiquity with two epigraphy-oriented, NCN-funded Maestro grants led by Krzysztof Nawotka, and the publication of the following books: “Epigraphic Culture in the Eastern Mediterranean in Antiquity” edited by Krzysztof Nawotka, and “Honorific Culture at Delphi in the Hellenistic and Roman Periods” by Dominika Grzesik.
Accordingly, Pawel focused on the methods of the study of the late antique epigraphical cultures, referring to different attitudes in research on cross-lingual aspects of the Near Eastern epigraphy, and to experimental methods in quantitative analysis of the similarities and differences in formulae used in ancient inscriptions. The discussion which followed the talk was instructive for further tailoring the methods for the project’s needs.
